What is the best/ cheapest method for getting this unit to -40 what is needed?

The best method of reaching -40 would be placing the vessel in a cryogenic freezer and setting the freezer to -40 so you know that it will not go too low in temperature. A cheaper method to get to -40 would be submerge the vessel in dry ice, but you will have to monitor it with an external thermometer to see what temp it is really at because the dry ice will be much colder than -40.
