The cold trap is placed inline between a process and a vacuum pump. The purpose of this cold trap is to remove contaminants such as solvent, water, or volatile compounds from the air passing through so they are not sucked in the vacuum pump. This leads to a longer vacuum pump life and less frequent oil changes (for rotary vane type vacuum pumps)
